The Texas Board of Nursing is the government agency that has jurisdiction to hear and decide administrative cases involving RNs in Texas. It is also the agency that is responsible for overseeing the practice of professional nursing all over the state of Texas. Any RN who is guilty of violating state laws and issuances from the Texas Board of Nursing may be subjected to fines or penalties of their license if not properly defended by a nurse attorney. As a matter of fact, the RN license can even be suspended or revoked.
A perfect example of this happened on June 9, 2011. While employed as RN in a home care facility in Edinburg, the RN exceeded her scope of practice by ordering several medications for a pediatric patient without receiving any orders from the physician.
Subsequently, she also administered different medications to the patient, without physician orders, including three times the correct dose of prednisolone.
The RNs conduct was likely to injure the patient from adverse effects due to incorrect doses and administration of medication without the benefit of a physician’s expertise.
The RN was summoned the Texas Board of Nursing to defend her case. She stated that in emergency care settings, there are many verbal orders received by nurses and in haste, there might be a lack of documentation or improper medication doses calculated. She also stated that she failed to write a verbal order and carry out proper documentation. She also explained that it was an isolated incident.
However, the Texas Board of Nursing found that her conduct violates the Texas Occupations Code. As a result, her license was suspended.
This is just one of the many cases why every RN in Texas is expected to act with prudence in practicing the profession. Gross negligence or disobedience on the part of the RN is never excused.
